Bologna

Bologna: culture and vitality

It is known as ‘scholarly Bologna’ for its ancient university but also ‘Feasting Bologna’ for the equally ancient love for good food. ‘Bolognese’ has become synonymous the world over with rich flavour and generous seasoning. Egg pasta, whether plain or filled, tagliatelle, lasagne or tortellini, is the city’s gastronomic banner and meat sauce its worthy anthem (not to mention Mortadella and the many other Emilian delights that spill out of the shop windows). Bologna is also one of the Italian cities of art with the most amenities and opportunities; indeed it was named “European Capital of Culture” in 2000. To say you are spoilt for choice is simply a euphemism. The calendar is filled with events in every season and sphere - from archaeology to the cinema, theatre and even jazz music. All this and more, because just outside the city are the Bologna Hills and within a 100-kilometre radius cities such as Modena, Ferrara and Ravenna, each with its own exceptional attractions.

The first Palio of Ferrara was in 1259 and it is the oldest one in the world. The whole month long there are many performances such as processions of musicians, knights, flag games, competitions and on the last Sunday of May the Palio takes place. There’s also a historical procession that crosses the city and enters the Estensi Castle, in order to show to the public the champions taking part in the race. A historical procession which is held before the Palio, moves through the city to the Estensi castle for the inscription of the different quarters of Ferrara to be part of the Palio.
