Genoa, European capital of culture
Genoa is the geographic fulcrum of the region and condenses all its characteristics - suffice to say it was named European Capital of Culture in 2004 for the sum of its historical and cultural heritage combined with today’s dynamism. The old city centre is a roll call of symbols of the old marine republic: Palazzo Ducale, now an eclectic cultural complex; the cathedral of San Lorenzo, with its Museo del Tesoro; the medieval Piazza San Matteo with its Doria mansions, and Strada Nuova, lined with splendid noble residences. On the seafront is a promenade leading to the Lanterna; the Porto Antico with new multipurpose structures and the famous Aquarium. Completing the attractions is an excursion outside the city to the Nervi Park, which combines the draw of four 19th- and 20th-century art collections with unforgettable surroundings. Widening the radius and to the east are the Cinque Terre, the epitome of the Ligurian landscape; to the west you have the charm of Noli and beautiful Mediterranean nature.
