MILAN
The art of shopping streets
Many people visit Milan on business but sooner or later even the busiest realise it is a wonderful city of art. The hub of the old city centre is Piazza del Duomo, with its amazing Gothic cathedral ‘sculpted’ in pink marble. Just a few steps away is the Galleria, an elegant city rendezvous that leads to Piazza della Scala, and the opera house that has brought worldwide acclaim to Milan. Nearby is the Brera district with the treasures of the Pinacoteca, and Via Montenapoleone, the gateway to the Quadrangle of Fashion. A second street leading off Piazza del Duomo leads to the Castello Sforzesco, set against the backdrop of the Parco Sempione. Along the way is the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, containing works by Leonardo, Raphael and Caravaggio. To the west is the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, home to Leonardo’s Last Supper, and the Romanesque Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, who is the patron saint of the city. To the east is Villa Reale, with the Galleria d’Arte Moderna, and the Giardini Pubblici. To the south, beyond Porta Ticinese, the picturesque Navigli district, for the evening social scene.
