Naples

Naples, the Mediterranean capital

Naples is one of the cities that wrote the history of the Mediterranean – a Greek colony then a Roman municipium, a Byzantine city and then Norman, finally the capital of a Spanish realm with a considerable Napoleonic period. This may explain its complex reality. The city’s symbols are the Castel Nuovo, better known as the Angevin Keep rising before the sea, and the Duomo, dedicated to St Gennaro, with its famous treasure. The many churches worthy of a visit include San Lorenzo Maggiore, testimony of the 2000 years of the city’s history, and Santa Chiara, with its remarkable majolica cloister. The museums include the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, with its Greek sculptures and Pompei’s paintings; the Gallerie di Capodimonte in Palazzo Reale, on a verdant hill; and the Certosa di San Martino, with a section on Neapolitan nativity scenes. The most picturesque city settings are Piazza del Plebiscito and Via Toledo, Spaccanapoli and Corso Umberto I, the promenade from Santa Lucia to Mergellina; Posillipo and Marechiaro. And after everything else, a visit to the Pompei’s excavations is a must.
