The Temples of Paestum and the Parco del Cilento

Seventy kilometres south of Naples is the archaeological site of Paestum, with its spectacular Greek temples. This is the visiting card of a unique National Park called Cilento – a large and varied area ranging from the rocky Palinuro coast that opens into caves to the green Sele valley, rising to the 1898 metres with Mt Cervati and such a rich natural and historic heritage that it has rightly been made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park appears to visitors as a surprising setting of gulfs and valleys, blanketed with spontaneous vegetation and extensive olive groves, placed against a backdrop of mountains deservedly known as the ‘Dolomites of the South’. This is what is called a living park because the traditional activities, from farming to stock rearing, have been boosted by the creation of the park and drawn attention to much local produce, from Bufala mozzarella to cold meats, wine and oil – bringing custom to restaurants and hotels alike.
