PISA
Pisa: a Leaning Tower with a view
The Tower of Pisa and Piazza dei Miracoli are among the three or four Italian sights known all over the world. There is no point saying ‘seen it’ because each time it is a new experience: the first time you are distracted by the excitement, the second you look at the architecture, the third you look around you… the faithful are content to walk on the grass of the ‘campo’ and read their newspaper, glancing now and again at what is happening around them. A spectacle is guaranteed such and so many are the people who want to see the leaning tower at least once in their lives. Then there is Pisa and the surrounding province, which is the real surprise of any trip. Draw a small radius on the map with a compass and you will find Versilia and Maremma, a paradise for fashionable seaside holidays and the most genuine natural Tuscan landscape (and one with great wines). Completing the choice are cities such as Lucca, so near and yet so different, and Volterra, famous for its masterpieces of Etruscan art and alabaster craftsmanship.
