Rimini
Not the Riviera you expect
When people say Rimini you immediately think of the Riviera Romagnola’s worldly pleasures – seaside, good food and nightlife – but there is another Rimini that revolves around the art and culture produced by an age-old history and a great humanistic tradition. One figure embodied the twin souls of Rimini – Federico Fellini, the film director people automatically adopt as their generous host in the city and its environs. Opportunities radiate out from Rimini with a surprising array of themes. Head north and you come to Ravenna, a unique city of art that relives the splendours of ancient Byzantium in its shining mosaics. It is reached along a beautifully natural coastline with beaches, pine groves, lagoons visited by herons and flamingos and, lastly, the Po Delta. One essential stop is Cervia, for its spas and also a visitor scenario of unequalled elegance on the Adriatic. Or go south, to Ancona or, rather, the Parco del Cònero, the main attraction of which are its splendidly rugged sea and nature plus truly exceptional food and wine. Lastly, without even going far you have the Rimini hinterland with its valleys climbing gently towards the Apennines; the places are delightful and the roads offer enjoyable driving and scenery although the main attraction is the good food on offer – Fossa cheese, Montefeltro ham, Acqualagna truffles…
