TURIN
Turin: tradition and new ideas
The city of Turin has enjoyed a hugely successful image in recent years. The operation that prompted this renewal was the conversion of Lingotto, the old FIAT factory, to a unique multipurpose complex. The large complex notably features the Pinacoteca Agnelli, arranged in a futuristic pavilion designed by the architect Renzo Piano with works by artists ranging from Canova to Picasso exhibited in hi-tech surroundings. The recent 2006 Winter Olympics also brought a wave of changes as, for instance, in the case of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, which has always featured extraordinary premises in the Mole Antonelliana but is now even more spectacular with multimedia. All this against the backdrop of a 19th-century city with its rituals and rendezvous, from the vermouth aperitifs to the old cafés, that mix the new with a quiet old-fashioned air. The attractions extend out to the Langhe, the sanctuary of Piedmontese wining and dining, and to Val di Susa for a day in the mountains combining sport with fine food.
