Alba and the flavours of the Langhe
The Langhe is a system of hills that occupies the southwest sector of Piedmont. The area is divided into two separate and very different parts with the Bassa Langa to the north and the Alta Langa to the south. The former is virtually monopolized by vineyards and the latter is renowned for rearing White Piedmontese cattle, which produce excellent meat and cheese. The capital of the Langhe, the repository of all its fine food and wines, is Alba, a charming walled town with a Piazza del Duomo crowned with medieval towers, Via Maestra lined with elegant shops, and squares that fill with crowds for the many events on the calendar – altogether there is a widespread air of savoir vivre. All around are the areas familiar to gourmets for their many delights: white truffles; Barolo and Barbaresco wines, not to mention Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo; Carrù ox and mixed boiled meats; robiola cheese plus those of Bra, Castelmagno and Murazzano. It is impossible to list them all as every village deserves a mention such is the concentration of fine wine producers, restaurants and hotels.
