VERONA
Verona, a memorable city A necessary stopover for the great travellers of the past, the city of Romeo and Juliet is still at the top of the wish-list of the most romantically inclined. Much credit lies with the Arena, which hosts great opera, but the city’s charm is in the overall picture - from Piazza Brà, with its cafés and the Liston promenade, to the shops lining the refined Via Mazzini; the bustle of Piazza delle Erbe, with its stalls, and the air of time stood still at the Arche Scaligere, the mausoleums of its former lords; the medieval views of Castelvecchio with the castellated bridge over the Adige River and the picturesque view of Veronetta across the river and the shadows of the Basilica di San Zeno, resplendent with its Madonna in Gloria by Mantegna. All together they have put Verona on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list – although its wonderful food must also take great credit. Three of Italy’s most famous wines are from Verona - Soave, Bardolino and Amarone della Valpolicella.
